I have a Seagate Barracude 7200.9 (IDE) that I had in an old computer as a secondary drive. I want to convert it to an external drive.

[COLOR=red yellow]Question: What size drive enclosure do I need?

The drive is 4" wide. Will it work in an 5.25 Ext. enclosure? This is the first time I will use an ext. case.

5.25 will work but make sure it is IDE or PATA: not SATA. Many of those on sale nowadays are SATA. Check the interface before you buy.

If you are getting it over the net, look for

drive enclosure 5.25 IDE

The measurement you have quoted (4") is the overall width of the hard drive 'chassis'. The cylindrical platter inside the drive is the bit that equates to its popularly known size of 3.5".

So yes, strictly speaking you probably could fit it in a 5.25" external case, but what you need is 3.5" external enclosure that will accept an IDE drive. Some enclosures only accept SATA drives - check this out before you buy.

Here's example:
ROGER - G0AOZ.

Or a 3" to 5" adapter kit that allows you to use 3" drives in 5" HH drive slots. I don't play in the 5" external enclosure area except with SCSI so am not aware if there are any that take 5" drives for PATA or USB.

If you are planning on using the drive as USB external then invest in one of the kits that take PATA 3" drives. Think I bought my last ones from Frys at around $25.
