Is there any software for unix that runs a server like speedtest.net that we could point our internal computers to. This would help diagnose point to point network problems.
NPtcp (a.k.a. NetPIPE) is a good tool for that job.
It doesn't have the easy user-friendly interface that a web site like speedtest.net does, but it'll give you a much more thorough assessment of your network's capabilities.
Create a download file, which you down- and upload, and measure the time. Choose the size, to make the test short but not too short - maybe such, that it will need 5s in good conditions.
