Does anyone know where I can instructions on how to configure sendmail to work only as an internal mailserver?

could get you going. After you try something you think should work but doesn't, come back and say what you've tried and the experts can iron out specific issues.

In general, you need everything for an internal network as you do to connect to the Internet. Working DNS that forward and reverse resolves every host on your internal network, sendmail must know about all users who want to send and receive mail, and sendmail must be configured to relay mail for all of those IP's (if it will be gatewaying to the real internet, otherwise, all users are valid and that's all you need.
