INTERNAL INCONSISTANCY ERROR ?? WHY 1

Application I developed a year ago is all of a sudden not allowing the deposit to be posted. (Big trouble) I'm not sure but I think the error happens when the tableupdate() command is issued? Has anyone encountered this and what can I do now?

Start by droping and recreating the indexes on the table you are trying to update. It sounds like the index got munged. Don't just use reindex, actual drop and recreate them.
