I am looking for something that will enable people on a small P2P (non-domain) network to communicate internally.

I have used MSN Messenger where all users have a regular email address, but I need something for situations where they don't. All workstations are using XP home or Pro, and not Server.

What low cost products are out there? I have heard of Argosoft mail server, but I think it works only on a domain.

Any other ideas?

Cheers,
Brodie

There is a community that is addressing this

This is one but there was a p2p mail enabled in win 3.1 for workgroups that might be portable to XP it would certianly be worth a look if you can locate a copy...

What are you using for mail client software? If you use the full version of Outlook (not Express) on your Win2000 & XP machines & have at least 1 Win9x machine, you can still use the old Microsoft Mail Postoffice. This is a good solution for an 'internal' mail system.

Thanks for the support on this...I was not positive if it would port as I have never done this, owing to having Exchange at hand.

rvnguy - that JXTA thing looks a bit heavy for me.

Luckily I still have my 3.11 disks - I was about to chuck them out !

Dumb question following :- how to "port" the post office from 3.11 to 2k/xp ?

Hopefully smah will chime in here, as I have not ever done this having used MS Exchange all these years. I just recalled that WFWG had a p2p mail system.

I would think that you could just install that portion of the WFWG that deals with the postoffice. If as smah stated that it will run...then it will setup a postoffice with your clients using Outlook and not Outlook Express and this is due to the fact that OE is a web (IE) linked mail client vs a standalone application.

I only know where it is on win9x. Besides, you'll need win9x to administer the Post Office. It could probably be done with 3.11, but I've never tried.

OK, it sounds like I will need a win9x pc on the network just to run the PO. Unfortunately that's not an option in my situation.

So... back to the drawing board.
