We had an amp put on the cable line leading to my cable modem, and ever since then the connection to the net has been very inconsistent. One minute all of the modem lights will be on, and we will ge getting content and the next only two of the modem lights will be on and we will lose out connection to the net. Any suggestions, or is it just not a good idea to use an amp in line with a cable modem?

amp meaning analog signal booster/amplifier type of thingy?

Yes, a signal amplifier. Any ideas?

Is the amplifier a good quality bi directional amp? Keep in mind the cable modem is sending data down to you at a particular frequency and sending signal back at a much lower frequency up the cable. Unlike traditional CATV service, the signal is not broadcast or one way, it is two way communications. As such, all components before that modem must be bidirectional and handle the frequency range that is used by the modem.

As suggested, I too would split the signal as it comes in going directly to the modem with one leg; then put the amplifier in for the balance of the service (CATV signal).

Good Luck!

Thanks Mike,

You just never know who might spot you. I was at the BICSI Seattle conference yesterday, casually in line for a complimentary beer when a gentleman from this group saw my name tag and introduced himself. Fortunately he didn't take a swing at me :) Looking forward to learning more and sharing ideas with a fine group of folks here.
