Hi,

I'm trying to find out why DNS routing doesn't always work in my network. My setup is just typical:

Internet -> ISP Provider -> DSL Modem -> Wireless Router -> LAN

The modem receives a dynamic address from the ISP.

My DSL Modem is the DHCP server for the wireless router, while my wireless router is the DHCP server for my LAN.

So when I do an "Ipconfig /a" in one of my workstations, the address of the gateway (which is also the local interface of the DSL Modem) shows up as the DNS server address. I understand that my dsl modem (which is also a router) will route DNS requests to the ISP's DNS server.

Sometimes this works, sometimes not. Sometimes I have to explicitly indicate the address of the actual DNS server in each of my workstations. Unfortunately, DNS resolution problem will return after a while, and I would have to reset the config to "obtain DNS server addresses automatically".

Any ideas?

Are you saying that after you statically assign the DNS addresses, after awhile, the DNS fails and the you have to set it back to auto?

If so, it sounds like an on-site hardware problem with one of your routers.
