Intermittent CPU slowdown - COMN.NSS?

We are experiencing drastic slowdowns opening or browsing for files throughout the day (Mac and PC users). CPU Load jumps to 80-90% for 10 minutes sometimes, 1 or 2 at other times. Everytime the COMN.NSS is either 1 or 2 in the usage list.

I see some mention of problems with older versions of COMN.NSS (mine is 3.05, 5/19/2004), and an update: nw6nss5c.exe but it doesn't list any fixes that sound like fixing my slowdown.

My server is 6 sp 5. I don't want to apply the patch just because. Anywhere else I can look? What does COMN.NSS do?

NSS patches are never bad. You should also try to check the NSS stats and see if you can get a baseline of the stats when things are good and then compare to when they are bad.
