Hello,
I have ADSL through AT@T in the San Diego area.I have a SpeedStream 5100 modem going into a WBR-1310 Router. About two weeks ago I had a no dialtone problem at the house. Checked the problem at the demarc, with IW isolated from the drop. No dialtone out to the street on my buttset(Never lost the DSL connection at all while the DT was down). Called AT@T and they dispatched a Tech out and fixed the no DT problem.Ever since the ADSL will go red on the modem, when you go off hook with the phone in the kitchen for about 5 to 10 seconds the ADSL will sync back up and work for a few hours or for 15 minutes. Which leads to going off hook with the phone to get it synced back up.I have replaced the wiring from the demarc to the Siecor filter to the network termination on the the filter,Cat5e(also replaced the DSL filter with another Siecor filter same model).Replaced the wire run from the voice side of the filter to the kitchen phone. All other runs are new wire runs that are home run from voice side of filter out to 3 other phones Cat5e wire.I've even unplugged the suspect phone for long periods and the problem still exists. This sounds like an AT@T problem still or is there anything that can be done on my side?
Thanks,
Dmac,

Sounds like somehow the phone is loading the ADSL circuit. That has to be a partial short at AT&T's end - doesn't it? I would call them if I were you.

I would guess that the tech swapped your cable pairs to fix your NDT.

This wouldn't be a problem if he swapped it to a groomed pair in the telephone cable, but if he swapped it to a non-groomed pair, then you could have trouble as you described because of the normal bridge taps creating too much footage and high freq reflections.

Call AT&T and tell them they screwed up your DSL when they fixed the NDT

Thanks for the replies,I got a tech scheduled for tommorrow. Hopefully they can get a better pair this time. Last time the tech told me they are really reluctant to swap pairs because they are trying to conserve pairs for ATT's rollout of TV service over the pair coming into your house. We'll see what happens. I'll keep you posted.

Dmac,

ATT tech was here yesterday and he gave me a new modem and a new splitter. Hooked up the new modem and got logged in. All good until about an hour ago. Lost signal and had to go off hook with a phone to get sync back. Tech said that he got a good pair from the F1 to the B box.Tech said that the drop from ped on neighbors lawn could be replaced and that should help. He said the signal is really strong all the way to the Demarc. If it continues to drop I'll install the the new splitter and see what happens.

Dmac,

As my daddy used to say; the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Unless you made a change to your network at the same time, AT&T obviously did something when they repaired your NDT, whether it was a pair swap out or God-knows-what.

I am a 30 year veteran with Telcos and if you keep calling in and reporting your DSL trouble they WILL do what it takes to fix it.

Unless they are giving you the service for free, you should feel no guilt for bugging them about this. All Telcos have report parameters they are not suppose to exceed and repeat reports are a biggie. Regardless what or where the trouble is, they will dedicate time to fix it to get you off their backs!

In defense of the repairmen, they are rated by hourly performance data that shows how productive they are throughout the year and with several techs working in an area, unless they take the time to look, they are not really going to know what has been done by a previous tech and what hasn't. So when the tech runs out there and replaces the modem, splitters, filters, modules, etc, they are eliminating the usual suspects.

Give the next guy that comes out there the full history of this trouble and be sure and remind AT&T constantly that this didn't start happening until they fixed your NDT issue.

Just an update...I called the ATT number that was given to me to call if more problems occured. I called it right after I made my last post and talked to a tech that was trouble shooting it as the signal was down. She told me that she was changing some settings and that she would call back to see how the DSL was working. About five minutes after the call was over the DSL synced up and it has been up since the 28th of September. Don't know what they did as she never called back. But as long as it is working,I don't care.
