intermitent fax tone on incoming calls to auto attendant

I have an avaya magix, and experincing intermittent fax tone when calls come to the main number. Calls are set up to go directly to the auto attendant but for some reason some times we get a fax tone when we call the main number. If you try again after the first fax tone the call goes through without the tone. Any help is very well appreciated

Do you in fact have a Fax machine as a station on your system?

Do you have any modems connected as stations on your system?

Do you have Burglar or Fire alarms.

Do you have a DSS console along with your Operator phone?

Do you have a PC running WinSPM directly connected to the admin port?

No fax, modem, burglar, PC or DSS connected to system

What type of voice mail do you have on this system?

Merlin Mail, MLM-007 or Merlin Messaging?

Perhaps the modem on the 007MLM is answering.

That would be the 7th PORT of that module.

Do you have it as part of the Voice Mail calling group?

That was my suspicion all along.

i have four exensions in the calling group and when i call them individually i do not get the fax tone. How do i locate the 7th or internal modem port

Use WinSPM or the programming phone, go to Maintenance, Port, Station, then dial * and the slot number, and 07, then press Enter, Status.

This will give you the extension number of the modem. Now you can dial it, and see if that is the same tone you are hearing (modem tones are different from faxes, but most people do not distinguish between them. Call your fax number to hear the difference).

Also with the extension number, you can print out its information and see if it is a part of a group, or has any lines assigned to it with incoming ringing.
