Interfacing Micros or Nixdorf workstations using USB to Epson IDN RS422 printers

I had an enquiry from a customer who was trying to interface some POS terminals (not sure if Micros WS6 or a Nixdorf product - it was a big company but the enquiry went dead before I found out any detail about the application) to Epson IDN printers. So I did a lot of digging around and found very little good info but after much running around we eventually managed to design an adaptor cable for our standard USB-RS422 converter which has the Epson IDN RJ11 connector on the other end. It has been tested and found to be working but as I say I don't know what workstation was involved.

It would be great to hear from anyone familiar with these systems. In particular the WS4 and WS5 specs state they have the IDN RS422 port so presumably can drive an IDN printer directly, but the WS6 spec states the IDN port is for a "drawer" so how do they drive the printer?

This USB to IDN RS422 interface may be a solution for some people but I would really like to find out what the application area is. As I say I am not sure if this is WS6 to IDN or Nixdorf to IDN, but those here who know the systems will probably know.

The operating system (some version of Windows) autodetects the converter and configures it to appear on COM5 where the POS software expects it. As far as I can tell, WS4-WS6 run some embeddeed version of Windows, while the Nixdorf terminals run Windows 7.
