I have a Solaris 8 server which recently had a gigabit nic installed (by another and now departed admin) which WAS working just fine. Now when I run "ifconfig -a" I only see the output for bge0 and not for any of the other devices, not even the old 10/100 NIC which (to the best of my knowledge) was left in the box. This box is classified and so is sealed, I cannot just break the seal to check the hardware until I know for sure it's a hardware problem. I'm mainly an AIX admin and would like to know what troubleshooting commands I can run to find out what the issue may be. Even lo0 is not showing up, yet I can still telnet into the box and it is functional, which makes me think this may be cosmetic, but how do I determine that? Thanks in advance for all advice and comments.

There are 10 types of people in the world: those who understand binary, and those who don't.

There are files in /etc named hostname.<nic>.

Example: hostname.bge0

This file contains the nodename for the NIC. If this file is missing, the OS will not load drivers for that particular NIC even though it is declared in the file /etc/path_to_inst
