inter vlan routing

Hi,

I am new to Extreme and coming from Cisco background.

This is my first job and my duty is to configure a summit x-450e switch which has one Server vlan .

Another Switch is Summit X-150 which has Client Vlan.

Now i need to connect these two vlans and configure inter vlan routing.

in x450e switch i create server vlan and ip is 172.16.32.254/20


in the X150 switch i created Client vlanand the ip is 172.16.80.254/20.

i enabled rip and ipforwarding on both the vlan.

cant ping from one vlan to another.

when i ping from 172.16.32.200(a user under server vlan) to annother user in client vlan cant reach.

any help will be highly appreciable........

Does the summit x-450e has a IP address on the Server vlan?

The port connected to the 150 does it has both vlans tagged?

Does you have the IP address of the summit x-450e set as the default gateway?

By giving the VLAN an IP address wich will be your gateway address on the clients.

Switch to Swtich ports need to be tagged otherwise the VLAN network is only reachable on one switch.

OK what it looks like your problem is that you need to tag the uplink ports between the switches. You have given a tag number to the vlan, but you need to add the uplink ports as "tagged" not untagged.

Like Bas1234 stated the ports need to be tagged so what you do is the port connecting the x450 to the x150 on both switches you will have to do the following command

configure vlan client-srv add port <port number> tagged
configure vlan srv_vlan add port <port number> tagged

obviously replace <port number> with the uplink port. One note you can't add a port to multiple vlans untagged, and you can't add a port to a vlan tagged if it already belongs to that vlan untagged. SO you will have to remove the untagged port from the vlan and add it back tagged. The rest of the ports can be added untagged or tagged depending if the client is configured to use tagging. But typically access ports are untagged. Think of the commands I gave you as setting up a trunking port.

eaps is a lot faster, but it will only work with Extreme products only.

If you connect it to a non extreme switch then use RSTP that faster then STP

Only thing with eaps is your topology has to be in a ring, where RSTP and PVSTP might be a little easier to integrate then eaps because of the ring topology isn't usually the first setup someone thinks of to setup. Also like Bas1234 said if you have a mixed enviornment eaps won't work very well for you.
