Each time I restart windows the above mouse works insofar as the front default buttons are concerned, but the side/rear buttons (both set at default) do not function until I go into "Mouse" in the control panel and switch one or the other of them out of their usual configuration and then back to default. Afterwards they work as intended. I have installed the most recent driver update from MS. Any help would be appreciated.

Check to see if your mouse driver "configuration file" is loaded at start-up. By pressing ctrl-alt-del after start-up, you will see a list of programs-modules loaded. Check for anything mouse related. If nothing, rerun your mouse config utility and look for any option that asserts "load at start-up". You may also have another start-up program that is configuring your mouse extended functions at start-up. If so, run that app and configure the mouse to your preferred default setting.

Also you can try taking a peek using msconfig, which you would type at your Start->Run dialog box. You can view lines in your autoexec.bat or config.sys, as well as programs that load at startup on the startup tab.

Thanks, JLKBUI and cdogg,

When I checked I had 'unchecked' pointer32.exe in msconfig. This was preventing the rear buttons from reloading their configs when I restarted windows. :)
