Intelligent Software Agent

Ok, i'm supposed to do some research and development into a software agent that will eventually deal w/ security. Problem is, i've never programmed windows applications before and the first step is doing something with web-browsing pattern recognition and trying to make this dumb box a little bit smarter. I'm using Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 on Windows XP. I'd be happy with a few tips or pointers or ideas concerning best way to gather information, how Internet Exploder really works, or any old thing you think maybe i should know.....

well talking to my research advisor now we've decided to try to make the program more portable,(windows/unix) but still stay with C/C++. Also, he mentioned running at the OS layer might be a good idea
