solved it - CTRl+ALT+SHIFT nuked the preference files - all's good now! =)

Well, some of Adobe's apps (Photoshop, Illustrator) store user preference files in the Windows user profile folder, forget where it is... some like c:\documents and settings\username\local settings etc. These Adobe pref files can sometime become corrupt and cause wierd errors that you wouldn't get otherwise (like insufficient memory for a PC with 2GB or ram??? as if!) anyhow, I got this CTRL+SHIFT+ALT trick from Adobe themselves so I've used it since - just forgot about it momentarily... =)

Thats great but what do you CRTL ALT SHIFT on? You can't just do it on the prefs file. What is the "trick"?

Ok, here's the deal: right (immediately) after you double click the Adobe Illustrator icon to start it, you must press CTRL+SHIFT+ALT at the same time right away - and if correctly done, a pop up box will ask if you wish to clear your preference files - click Yes.
