Instead of Mapped drives..Sharepoint Network folders?

If hypothetically speaking one was to want to navigate away from using groups and NTFS permissions and use Network Folders to connect to a SharePoint folder (instead of mapped drives) and base the whole operation around a SharePoint site (for each group like marketing/sales/etc), other then losing the granularity of NTFS permissions which by many would be a huge loss but that is not the case, what other negatives would there be. Basic setup is as follows...

My Computer -> Network Folders to each depts SharePoint site internal url, Each depts home page would link to their page.

I am sure there are security concerns that I am missing, but it really is presenting itself as a decent idea to create a more centralized approach (at least in my case).
