Instant Messenger launch with outlook express

Having an interesting problem.

Go into outlook express. check email - no problem. Then I switch Outlook express identities and AOL IM pops up. Why? and can I disable IM from starting this way?

Click on TOOLS - OPTIONS and then uncheck "Automatically logon to your messenger service" joegz

This has started happening to me also since AIM updated two days ago to 5.1.3036. I looked under TOOLS, OPTIONS and the box reading "Automatically logon to AOL Instant Mess", is not checked, so that will not help here.

It seems that it has to be a control added with this latest version. Very annoying.

Turning off the option in Outlook Express, Tools > Options to start AOL Instant Messenger when opening Outlook Express does not work. You must uncheck the option in AOL Instant Messenger that makes it the default Instant Messenger (IM) program:
Open AOL Instant Messenger and Sign on.
Click My IM on the menu.
On the drop-down menu, select Edit Options and then Edit Preferences then Sign On/Off.
