Hi.

I'm using Windows XP, and am having problems installing any software that uses InstallShield. When it starts preparing InstallShield, before the task bar moves, an error comes up which says "Error extracting support files: the specified module could not be found". I looked around on the internet and on microsoft's website about this and found many articles, all of which had the same list of troubleshooting methods on them. None of which work. I got the list from and have tried almost everything on it. Installshield is a version higher than 6.

Just to run through this list and let you know what I haven't and have tried.

1. I am the administrator of my machine.
2. Nope, no setups right in a row.
3. checked, and lkernal isn't there.
4. cleaned my temp dir and it still didn't work.
5. you can't rerun the setup because when you try to, it tries to install it with installshield. gee, that makes sense. install the bugfix with the broken software. nice.
6. you can't install IE 5 anymore because IE 6 is out, and you aren't allowed to move backwards, the installation won't allow it. I tried to reinstall 6, but it wouldn't let me do that either. (anyone know how to remove IE from the computer, I'll try that next, but can't get it to actually leave.)
7. i didn't check this, because it seemed highly unlikely, given i am the only user of my machine and certainly haven't removed any permissions for myself.
8. searched, and i have one.
9. windows XP, so nope.
10. Same this at #5, it tries to use installshield to install it.
11. can't find the screen or tab they refer to.
12 and 13. i'm not to the point of messing with my reg yet.

Sorry this is so long, I figure the more details I give, the more hopeful I can be that someone will help me! So if anyway doesn't mind, or has fixed this on their computer, I would love to get it fixed. Not being able to install programs is very frustrating.

XP has SFC...which runs at a command prompt and may not used (?) installshield.
Type sfc(space)/? for a list of commands...and have the CD handy...just in case it works!

I can't seem to find llog.dll. Any ideas where it might be?

Also, in Windows XP, when you delete a dll it just puts it back for you, assuming that there's no possible reason that you would want to delete a dll so you must not know what you're doing. Any way to turn this off so I can actually delete the file?

If it is not in Program Files/ Common Files/ InstallShield
(check the sub folders) then it is not on your system. It obviously is not in every system as I don't have it either.

As to turning off SFP it is possible to do it but is unnecessary for Dll files that are not part of the Windows operating system.

Well.

Since I have no llog.dll, does anyone else have any other ideas on how to fix this problem? Should I start backing up my files and looking into a system restore? Or does anyone from Installshield frequent this board that could let me know whether a patch for this problem has been made?

Um...
I'm using sfc to scan whether my windows files are all safe and sound, but I don't see any options in here that seem to imply installation.

Where would it be?

Zoethor, you say in one post you don't have Ilog...but it is a typo...you say ell log...are you looking for ell log instead of Ilog?
I have Ilog on my system...

As for SFC...if it finds a difference (haven't used it in XP...)it asks for the CD to replace it...I was hoping the Installshield files were among the files that were part of Windows.

I tried deleting ilog.dll, but it still didn't work.

I also stuck the Windows XP CD in and "updated" Windows, which was the installationg option that would preserve my files. This didn't help. If I can't manage to find something in the next few days, I'm probably going to start backing up my important files and try reinstalling Windows fully. I think I've tried just about everything else.

If it might help you I have included a list of the files residing in my InstallShield folder for you to compare with yours.

Directory of D:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Engine\6\Intel 32
. <DIR>
.. <DIR>

corecomp.ini 28 KB 16/12/1999
ctor.dll 77 KB 5/09/2001
IKernel.exe 597 KB 5/09/2001
iuser.dll 173 KB 5/09/2001
objectps.dll 33 KB 5/09/2001

Directory of D:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\IScript
. <DIR>
.. <DIR>

iscript.dll 221 KB 5/09/2001

As a last ditch (nothing to lose situation) before you do a clean install. Why don't you search your machine for everything to do with InstallShield (search the Registry, folders and even System32 Dll files) and delete anything referring to InstallShield and see what happens. Like I said this would be the last desperate action to try before a clean install.

ILog.dll is on my system at C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\engine\6\Intel 32
if it matters. Perhaps it isn't always necessary for it to work...
It was created when I installed WinXP...and hasn't been accessed since.

Oddly,
I seem to have a bunch more files in my directory than in yours. In addition to yours, under the Engine directory I have:
ihook.dll
msihook.dll
scpthdlr.dll
knlwrap.exe

Plus I also have a Driver/7/intel32 directory.

I think I am going to try to delete all of installshield and then go find someone here who isn't having this problem and get a copy of theirs. Maybe it'll work!
