Have a VFP9 exe with a handful of machines all running XP. No problems but will be adding some Vista machines. Are there any things to look out for when running the InstallShield routine for a mixed operating system environment?

Any comments much appreciated

Why are you adding Vista? I wouldn't do that now that Windows 7 is out. It's MUCH better.

However, with Win7 or Vista, the user will need to install with elevated Admin privledge. Also, if you are writing ANYTHING to Windows or Program Files folders after the install, the users could experience problems due to UAC.

I suggest you setup a Win7 PC and test for yourself as that's the only way you will know if YOUR application works correctly or not.

Craig,

Why are you adding Vista?

I can't speak for RGW, but very few of us have that much control over the systems that our users are using. If I could tell my clients not to use Vista, life would be much easier, but I wouldn't have as many clients.

In general there is no big difference in doing a setup for XP and Vista. MS does have some guidelines on what to do, Vista just enforces more of them than XP. UAC is the big difference.

If you already do deplay application data into AppData and PRograms in ProgramFiles and only use the HKEY_CURRENT USER part of the registry in your application UAC won't hinder you to continue. If you do things, which XP still allows but Vista's UAC limits to admins, you have to learn now, what MS already recommended for XP and even older Windows versions...

Bye, Olaf.
