Hello All,

I am trying to downgrade a system from Vista to XP Pro for a friend. When I run the xp cd it blue screens when it starts to stay windows setup is loading. So I am not able to get to the part where I create partitions and format, etc... The cpu has 2 hard drives in it that were set as Raid 0 and Raid 1. I don't know what this means. I tried taking out one hard drive and the same thing happened. Any ideas? Thanks

Nick

As I recall, you have to wipe out the Vista bootloader from the drive if you upgrade from Vista to XP (that's probably more accurate than "downgrade", which is if you go the other direction)

Run the recovery console on the XP disk when you boot up. Then execute fixmbr and fixboot.

Hopefully that will get you on your way.

raid0 is 2 disks configured to appear as one larger (sum of the 2) disk. Raid1 is 2 disks configured to appear as one the size of the smaller (usually identical disks are used). You can have 2 drives set to one or the other. Probably a good idea to check out your bios settings. If they are set for Raid, you will need to supply drivers to the XP install process (press F6 when prompted near the start, then supply floppy disk with drivers on - assuming machine has floppy drive). Probably a better bet would be to turn off RAID (I'm assuming SATA drives) and setting drives (or drive - you could disconnect one during the install process) to IDE mode. Then XP won't need any additional drivers. If it still blue screens during the install process you have a hardware problem. If it doesn't, you should remove any partitions it finds and then create new one for XP.

Thanks for the responses. They did the trick!
