Installing wireless adapter(s) on Windows 7 RC

Good evening all.

I started to try and resolve this problem a week or so ago in another thread (not appropriate for the subject matter). I'm trying to get a wireless connection set up on a SONY VAIO desktop PC under Windows 7 RC that was running XP SP3. I'm unable to make any progress with this issue.

I did get several suggestions - both wireless adapters should be compatible with Win 7 as they both worked fine on a Windows Vista machine. I did get one excellent suggestion from BadBigBen - video from a German user installing the NETGEAR WG111T wireless stick. While I couldn't follow exactly due to language issues, I did follow as nearly as I could decipher - when finished - only get a message that the driver wasn't installed correctly.

I have two adapters - the NETGEAR unit and a Linksys Compact Wireless-G USB Adapter with SpeedBooster. Both worked on the SONY PC with XP - even though the NETGEAR unit worked better. I have tried every way that I can think of or read about to install either of these adapters with absolutely no luck. All other devices connected to the PC work fine - a HP printer, a Logictech video camera, a Logictech headset/microphone set, a portable 160 GB hard drive and a SONY Lightscribe CD/DVD unit. Did not have to install anything extra to get all these 'extra' devices to work. The only problem is the network connection - that had been working fine under XP. With either adapter, I continually get an error message to the effect that the 'driver was not installed successfully' or some similar statement. I certainly would appreciate any and all advice you all might have! I like the Windows 7 product and would really like to do some extensive testing, but without network connectivity, I am at a standstill.

Thanks!

Some people have it going on Windows 7. They seem to have to jump through hoops to get it installed.

Thanks linney! I have looked and tried all things shown in your links, and the following is all that happens. If I go to the device driver list and find the "WG111T" adapter, then uninstall it and restart the computer, I always get the message - "Device Driver Software Was Not Successfully Installed". I have tried this several times - same result. One other possible clue - the adapter is listed under "Other devices" and not under "Network adapters" as expected. I have checked with the NETGEAR site and have the latest drivers available from them - following the suggested installation procedure for the WG111 didn't work either - same message.

I have also tried reinstalling Win 7 with no change in the installation results.

Any other suggestions out there?

Again, thanks!

Is there any hardware alternative to both the NETGEAR WG111T, and the Linksys Compact Wireless-G USB Adapter with SpeedBooster, that you can try?

Bill, for the NetGear you may want to try the Vista driver for the WG111v2, it is Vista and wg111T compatible...

only caveat that I read, was that the supplied Control Software may not work, and uninstalling it would leave the DRIVER for the WiFi stick...

linney - I would have to buy something - any suggestions? If I need to buy another adapter, OK. I just wouldn't know the best choice under these circumstances, so recommendations would be helpful.

BadBigBen - I believe I have downloaded that driver and tried it, but I have done so many things - I will try your suggestion again.

Thanks guys -

What do D-Link make in the line of hardware that you are trying to connect? I have used a D-Link Adapter myself and it has worked on, and between, XP and Vista, and allowed them both to connect to Windows 7. I do have a Linsksys Wireless Router that the D-Link Adapter connects through.

Linney - haven't tried the new hardware approach yet. May go looking for D-Link adapters later today.

and Nocandu - will download and try the new driver for the Linksys adapter. Thanks.

Will be back after I try these suggestions. Hopefully later today.

Nocandu -

I have gone to the link and see that the driver ID is different than the Vista or XP ones. I seem to be having trouble downloading the driver however - what am I missing here? I end up going back and forth between Linksys and the link you provided. Searching the internet doesn't give me a location where the new drivers can be downloaded either. Maybe I'm confused (that could be sometimes!) ???

LohneB, have you tried to install in compatibility mode? it would also be helpful to know if you have the 32bit or the 64bit flavor...

Install using Compatibility Mode

To install a driver using Compatibility Mode, right click on the Setup Application Stub (usually titled Setup.exe or whatever program you are opening to install the driver) and click on Properties, and then click on the Compatibility tab, enable Compatibility Mode and select “Windows Vista RTM” from the drop down list, then click on OK and try again.

Still no luck. The Linksys model number is WUSB54GSC ver 2. I'm using the 32 bit installation of Windows 7 RC. I have the CD that came with the Linksys adapter, and it is for version 2. I have installed and uninstalled any driver I can find several times. Even have times that device says it is working correctly, but not true.

I have also tried everything with the NETGEAR WG111T. At this point, short of going out and buying another adapter, I'm about ready to go back to XP as without network connectivity, the machine is of no value.

I'll keep working the issue for the next few days as time permits, but can't afford to give it much more time. After being in this business for a LONG time, I have never had other than minor problems getting an adapter to work with any computer. Very frustrating!!

Again, thanks....

Hi again!

As a 'last stab' effort, I decided to try and connect to the local network one last time using the NETGEAR adapter. I deleted all related hardware and software and reinstalled the latest driver for the WG111T device. Followed the instructions, plugged in the adapter when instructed, and available networks appeared! I went through the setup procedure, and all is now working fine. I can't explain it - I had gone through exactly the same process several times with different results. Anyway, I'm now satisfied that all appears to be working OK and with help from you all, persistence can and does pay off!! Thanks all..
