Hey

I've bought a computer that has Windows Vista Business pre-installed. Of course, this operative system won't run most of the older games that I'm trying to install on it.

I found this seemingly useful guide on how to install Windows XP on a computer that already has Vista pre-installed ( ).

My hard drive is a Samsung HD 161GJ. It has been divided into three partitions. The two smaller ones are named HP_Recovery and OS_Tools. I did as the guide suggested and shrunk roughly 10 gb from the main partition.

I moved on and came to the point where I was about to install XP. After the XP CD had been read and it said "starting Windows XP", I was waiting on the option menu. Instead, I got the following error message; Stop 0x0000007B (0xf78D2524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) .

I know that I could simply uninstall Vista, but I'm not willing to remove it just yet. Hopefully someone here can help me out. Please, let me know if You need to know about any more specs than the ones which I already has given. And
please excuse my poor English, it's not my first language.

Thanks in advance and best regards

What type of hard drive are you installing onto, is it one that requires you to press F6 during Setup to install drivers so that XP Setup can recognize the hard drive and Partition?

There are settings in the Bios that may need to be looked at on a Vista installed machine too. See what this says about the AHCI setting.

Later parts of this thread will talk about IDE compatibility settings where you configure SATA as IDE.

Why is Format greyed out in WinXP 'Manage' ?

A way better method of installing XP side by side on your Vista system, is to get VirtualBox, and create a new virtual machine that you install XP into. You are then able to start and stop the XP machine only when needed. You should ofcourse not be running games or hardware dependent stuff inside a virtual, but if you really need that (old games compatibility or hardware requirements) you should have bought the new PC with these prerequisites, instead of getting an off the shelve model (and what's that Vista for?, Windows 7 is now the new way to go!).

Hey there, I use this site here for Windows STOP messages:

According to the site, the message you are getting means (copy and pasted):

"0x0000007B: INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE"

Windows lost access to the system partition or boot volume during the startup process. Typical causes: Installing incorrect device drivers when installing or upgrading storage adapter hardware, or a virus.

When we upgrade our computers to Vista we have to flip an option in the BIOS from AHCI (or something) over to the other option (you'll see it in there). It's probably the same for reverting to an older installation.

I'd bet it's an option in the BIOS that needs to be flipped.

The 7B Stop error means nothing more than that the Setup/Installer does not have the RIGHT driver for the SATA controller...

check the links that Linney provided...

as mentioned you could also check the BIOS setting for the SATA Controller in the BIOS and change it to IDE (also called LEGACY)...

I'd suggest that get all the hardware drivers, for XP, before you install, this will save you headaches in the end...

the use of VirtualBox, or other VM solutions, is not viable if you want to play games, to this date they have hardly any 3D support...
