I have celeron 500 MHz with 128 MB ram. I already have win 98 on it and i want the xp too. So i start the installation from xp cd-rom in win 98. All goes well, computer restarts, copyes the files, restarts again. Then the real installation begins. It start copying other files, i set the administrator password, date&time settings, network setting... But somewhere it freezes. Sometimes it freezes when there are 30 min left. The farther i got was to 13 min.
Any help or suggestions would be nice. Tnx.

Howdy:

Are you doing a clean install (formatting, partitioning and then installing) or just an upgrade??

Did you run the system compatibility wizard FIRST to make sure all of the hardware on your system was compatible with XP??

In the bios can you go and check for me to make sure your computer can except Windows XP,(you might need to hit F1 or Del key depending on the board when the PC is begining it's normal boot process) If you it does not except XP then is your culprit, find out who the manufacter of your board is and download the most current Bios and then Flash it, then try your install again. If you try and run WinXP and your system's Bios isn't up to the task then you can run into problem just like this.

Anyhow post back if this helps or if you have any further questions.

Just a little clarification, but BIOS isn't going to tell to anything about whether or not your system can handle XP.. Not sure where the other expert is going on that one !!

Ability to handle XP is determined strictly on installed hardware and software !!

See if any of these help you.

1 thing I've learned NOT to overlook is the BIOS setting for Halt on Error (not in all BIOS, but in lots of them) and be sure it's set to none...last time it happened I was fighting a simple (should be) Win98 install and finally dawned on me when I enabled bootlog.txt the system was halting 'cause loading some fonts was failing...and was keeping me from getting clear into the desktop.
But I'm learning.

Tnx for all the replies. I've tryed everything you said and it just wont work. I suspect it's my graphics card. The problem didn't start just now. I'm having this problem for some time now. My computer just won't install windoes xp or 2000 pro. It will however install windows 98 and ME. But when you install win 98 the system will freeze up in a matter of minutes.(if you're in a game it wont) You wanna know how i solved this problem ? I took my hard disk to another computer and installed the windows there. Took the HD back to my computer (fixed the new hardware and drivers issues) and it all works well.
And there are a lot of wierd things with my computer. It seems only i can use it. If somebody else is using it the computer will just hmm...how do i put this...freak out. If it was a horse it would have shot to put him out of his mysery :)
Well, it all works now. As long nobody else uses it :)

Just out of curiousity, but did you disable the on-board (CMOS) anti-virus program before trying the install??
