I have gone to the Windows Update page and downloaded all the patches and updates for Windows ME because I plan on reinstalling ME soon on my PC. There are 46 Critical Updates in the WU directory which was created on my hard dive (which I plan on copying to a CD). I was wondering how to install these upgrades without having to run each individua exe file in the directory. I figure there must be a better way - any help would be appreciated. There is a file in the directory with an xml extension that seems to list all the upgrades, but I don't know what to do with it. Thanks.

Order the Microsoft Windows Security Update CD which has all the fixes through Oct 2003. Sadly, they don't advertize it very much. I think it was done to answer complaints they have only one way to update - online. I just wish they'd place it by the box at the checkout counters of the local computer stores and supermarkets. The people who've had their computers hijacked by spammers and phishers (1) often don't know it and (2) won't know how to get the CD.

Thanks for the replys - I have ordered the CD.

Just to let you know - running the updates - the way you first planned on doing - I do not recommend because if you don't run them in the perfect order then one update might undo a previous update

And a note on the update cd - The cd has its flaws - it seems to take longer to update using the cd than to just run windows update from online - if you have a fast internet connection I would recommend just updating via the internet

Thanks for the advice - makes sense!

Some people do share Percent's opinion on the slowness of using the Update CD. However, here's an article that gives a different view (it only took 20-25 minutes to update a fresh install of Win98SE):

Now 25 minutes is certainly nothing to jump up and down about, but I know that recently it took me as long as 1 hour to update a Win98SE system over the net. I haven't tested the CD myself, but I've heard just as many good reports timewise as I've heard bad. It probably depends on the OS and speed of your system.

Here's an order link for others that might visit this thread down the road:
