I have a Windows 98 first edition that has problems rebooting. It takes about 3 or 4 times before it finally reboots okay. The other times it just stalls (the mouse pointer doesnt move) right after it puts the icons on the desktop. Can I reload Windows 98 second edition on this Compaq pc and I will also have to load MS Office 97 and Netscape?

What should I back up (besides personal folders and bookmarks) before I install a new Operating system?

Hi Teser!
I would try to update all drivers before reloading Windows. You can also check your network settings. Remove all protocols and services that you don't use, if your computer is set up to receive a IP address from a DHCP server but you don't have one on your network then that can cause the computer to stall for a moment when booting.
If you decide to upgrade to Windows 98 SE then make sure that you have the drivers you need to connect to Internet (NIC or modem) before you format the disk. Also you should backup you E-mails if you use Outlook or any other E-mail client. Of course, personal folders and files is most important.

I am using a the dial up modem for my internet connection. The drivers for this would be in the Windows SE cd? If not where and how do I get them. I assumed that would be something I set up (establish ISP settings etc...) after I loaded the new OS.
Please advise.

Yes you set that up after loading the new OS but I recommend you to download drivers to you modem and store them on a floppy disk when reloading Windows, this way you can connect to Internet after the upgrade and get other drivers you may need. It's a bit more difficult to get modem drivers from the Internet without modem drivers..
You can download drivers from the manufacturers web site.

How do I find out what modem I have?
Thanks for all your help.

Just look at the modem, the manufacturers logo or name is probably in the front or on the top of it. You can also lock under the modem where I think you will find more detailed information. If you can't find the correct drivers, just post everything that you can read on the modem here and I will try to help you.

Is the modem located in the back of the CPU?
Please advise where it is located???

Hello!
You can locate your modem by following the cable from the phone jacket to the computer. It's either an internal modem or an external. It's easy to find out what type of modem you have if it's an external one, just read on it. If you have an internal modem, then you probably got it when you purchased your PC and Compaq should have the correct drivers on their site.
You can find drivers and software to Compaq computers here:
