I have a PC running XP prof & want to install 98SE as 2nd OS. What are my options. I'm pretty thick at this, so a break down would be good plus any info on how I would actually achieve this.

Is your XP Pro filesystem NTFS or FAT?

If it is fat then you will need a second harddrive to install 98.

I would suggest trying VMware workstation located at

On dual boots the older operating system needs to be installed first. IE Win 98SE needs to be installed first then install XP. I found out the hard with Win 98 and Win 2000

Standard M$ dual boot for 98/XP requires 98 installed first. And you need a separate partition for each operating system.

If you have just the one drive, you will need to partition it into 2. You can do this with something like Partition Magic - to retain existing XP. Or you could backup and start fresh (wipe disk, create partition for 98, install it, then install XP on partition in remaining space - will get dual boot menu automatically).

If you go the partition magic route (or use a second drive for 98), I'd suggest using a third party boot manager (recommend - free for personal use), and hide the XP partition while installing 98 (if 2 drives, just disconnect XP drive, if 2 partitions boot-us and partition magic have tools to hide partitions).

thanks for everyones help - I guess I already knew I would need to install 98 1st, but it never hurts to ask
