I have an older Gateway, ordered new and also an older Gateway that had Win ME. Having too many problems with this one, and no disks with it. My question, is can I install Win 98 and then SE upgrade that came with my first computer on the other one, since they are both Gateway? If I can do this, how to do it.Win ME freezes up too much, have never had a problem with 98. Thank you for any help.

nelliebee - if you have win98 install CD then you can install it on the 'ME' machine (presume that's the one from your previous post on ME forum? - thread748-1485708) - see my comments there about installing 98. You may need to obtain drivers for graphics/sound etc - which may exist on the Gateway site.

If you have a 'recovery' or 'restore' CD (ie, designed to take the Gateway machine back to 'factory settings', rather than installing 98 from scratch) it may or may not work on the 'ME' machine (some of these only work on machines with exact spec they're expecting - others will work on any machine). If this is what you have and you can use it (usually boot from the Cd or sometimes they come with a boot floppy) - you may still need to obtain drivers, as it would have drivers for ypur other machine if it has any).

But whatever you have, its worth a try if you want to resurrect that machine.

YOu can do the SE install with the upgrade, ir will ask for the 98 to prove that it is legal.

I would normally put the SE install stuff on the hard drive. It makes it easier to load the drivers that normally come off the CD.
