I have a GF4Ti and Linux Mandrake 9.0. It can use my GPU at about 1/1000 of it's potential... that's sad.

I know this is not right so I went to nvidia.com to download drivers.

I downloaded the GLX rpm, the Mandrake 9.0 Enterprise i586 Architecture kernel driver (or whatever else it is), then I downloaded the .pdf with the setup instructions.

Tried to do everything according to the manual, but no luck - the kernel wouldn't install. Why? I heard smth like "the versions of the GLX and the kernel thing must match", but the GLX is i386, while the kernel thing is only i586.

Can anybody give some rational explanation regarding all that?

Try downloading the NVChoose script from nvidia. It will tell you what kernel you should download. The RPMs have never worked for me either. By any means, download the tarballs and compile the drivers manually. Its real simple and only take about less than 10 minutes on my TBird 1.33Ghz box.

Try the Mandrake 9.0 UP i586 Architecture.

Install the kernel first, then the glx and then edit the XF86Config file.

add load "glx"

Remove Load "dri" and Load "GLcore" (if they exist)

change driver "nv" to "nvidia"

logout and login and you should see the nvidia splash screen.
