Hello I am completely new to the world of unix and am about to get started. I currently have win 2000 setup on one Hardrive and would like to install unix on a "spare" hardrive. Is this a good way to go or should I partition the first hardrive and install there.

Any suggestions or websites that could help me out would be would be great.

How is unix for a intel based system different from unix for a sun box?

again I am a complete newbie here having just decided to start to learn about unix so any info would be an help alot
thanks

I have dual-booted before using Windows98 (not W2000 though), but you should be able to do the same thing. When you install Unix (I have installed both Slackware Linux and FreeBSD (my pick over Linux)) and use the Unix boot manager to control the master boot record for booting. If you mess up you can boot off of a floppy and run fdisk /mbr (at least on W98/95) to fix it.

Thanks for teh reply

One more question

How should I setup up the HDD. Can it be a slave to my 'main' HDD or should it connect via the same cable that runs to my CD rom??

It doesn't matter if it is secondary slave, primary slave, or secondary master. I had mine setup on the same cable as my CD-ROM, thereby making it secondary master. The only thing that really matters is that Windows has to be the primary master.
