Never mind, I grabbed the stand-alone installer. Freaking rediculous that I can't use the same media that I just installed a server with. 3 to 1 I have different revision numbers on my servers when I'm through.
You can't install just the SP from the overlay unless you want to guess which IPS file to use.
When I switch to linux it won't be SuSE 'cause their documentation sucks just as bad.
So if you use the overlay, you don't need to do the service pack. Only need the standalone service pack if you installed the server from the original (or previous SP version) media. Or if you want to REINSTALL the service pack without reinstalling the whole server.
Honestly, this is a lot easier than in the past when you didn't have overlay cd's.
Also, when you want to install components the weren't part of the original install... Put CD#2 in and from the GUI setup, point to the file that is on the root of that volume. If you use CD#1 for this, you're pretty much reinstalling your server.
Sorry to see you having a bad day. It happens once in a while.
I used the iso to load a new server last week. Now I want to bring my other existing servers to the same patch level. A quick MOUNT ALL and then VOLUMES at the console told me what the volume name was.
But, I can't use this media to patch my existing servers. I just don't see what the point of these overlays are if you can ONLY use them to build from scratch. I mean, if I've gotta have the standalone version on hand anyway, why use any CD other than the vanilla factory disks? I guess it would be convenient if I was loading up hundreds of new builds.
If "the ISO" is referring to the overlay CD, then you are right, you can't use it to apply the service pack level to other servers. You'll need to download the SP and apply it to them. As why have an overlay CD, the general opinion is that it produces an easier install.
