I've got no real knowledge or experience with SQL server but I need to install SP 3a, a pre-req for SMS 2003. Is there anything I need to look out for? I've been told I can't just run the installation of the SP... Any input is appreciated. I'm going to look around on the web now...later!

I do not beleive you should have to much trouble installing SP3a if your current SQL Server installation is sound.

Because SQL Server service packs are cumulative, SP3a includes all fixes from previously released Service Pack 1 (SP1), Service Pack 2 (SP2), and Service Pack 3 (SP3). SP3a can be applied to an original installation or to one where SP1, SP2, or SP3 was previously applied.

I pulled that blurb from the MS link here ...

Hope this helps and if not ... please try us again w/ your specific issues.

Enjoy!

Thanks

I have found that you cannot install SP3/3a if you don't have at least SP 1 installed.

Hey Bill ...

That is pretty interesting. I have installed SP3 and SP3a to straight up SS2K installs, w/ no prior packs loaded, on 150+ servers out in the field and have not had a problem.

What type of issues did you see?

Thanks

I (and others I have assisted with this issue) ran @@version and it didn't show the new level (760). It still showed the level for no service pack.

But the interesting thing is that at no time was there ever any error message saying it DIDN'T install. Just couldn't find any proof of the install anywhere. Installed SP1 and then SP3a, no problem, the version updated.

I found a 54 page 'book' on updating to SP3a. Aside from having 3 seperate files and having to backup some DB's nothing too wierd yet..

Thanks

Hey, it's me again...

On to updating Analysis Services, this doesn't look like a feature that is installed/available by default. I read up on where I was supposed to check for file backup and the files don't exist. Is it now safe to assume I don't have to run this part of SP3a?

If AS is not installed, then you do not need to run sql2kasp3 to upgrade Analysis Services

Thanks

Bill that is odd. i have not done as many as jay, but ive done a good 50 or so and have not had any problems on any of them. i randomly checked a couple and they are indeed correct.

Try theses queries to check.

SELECT @@VERSION,
sp_server_info
and master..xp_msver.

In SQL Server 2000, there is a new system function called SERVERPROPERTY, that returns service pack information. How to use it? Here you go ........

SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('ProductLevel')
GO

Incase of Select @@VERSION, you can find from build number -
For SQL Server 2000
Build 8.00.194 >> NO SP
Build 8.00.384 >> SP1
Build 8.00.534 >> SP2
Build 8.00.760 >> SP3/SP3a

Hope this will help you.

Hello!

First, I'm not a sysadmin or DBA: but I'm stuck trying to update the desktop engine to SP3a, and it's failing. I have referencing pages 17-21 of the MS doc on installing SP3a: I have the Instance name, and know the installer. It fails from the command line in C:\sql2ksp3\msde:
setup /upgradesp sqlrun
-gives "Product is not installed...", and "Could not find package to install (it's in \Setup).

using setup /settings (calls the ini file) results in "The instance name is invalid". Got this with a blank ini, and with the instancename spec'd, with and without quotes (it has a space). I have something wrong somewhere...

Contacting the vendor that supplied the application, but they haven't responded yet. Any thoughts?

Are you using the proper SP3? There are three versions. One for SQL Server 2000, one for Analysis Services, and one for MSDE. This is the name of the file you should be installing: SQL2kdesksp3.exe

Also, in the future - please start your own thread don't 'tack' onto others.

SQLBill:

Oops, sorry about the thread. Since thiw was close, wasn't sure if I should start another.

The desktop install put itself in a folder called MSDE, seperate from the "regular" SP3a.
I think I really need to contact the vendor for their upgrade. I just want to confirm that I have tried to do this correctly: that the desktop portion must be installed from a command line prompt, or using a windows installer.

Thanks

I just finished upgrading a SQL Server 2000 sp2 to sp3a on Win2003, I used the wizard and it worked fine. I had tried to find all of the information in Win about which sql server installed I had origionally used and couldn't. I didn't have verbose errorlogging set and it wasn't in the Registry were the upgrade instructions said it would be. I downloaded doc "How to Upgrade an instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine to SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3" (MS Knowledge Base Article - 815013) and this was somewhat informative as a checklist and process guideline. This might not apply, but nowhere in the docs that I read does it say the SQL Server must be running. If the SQL Server is not a custom installation (SqlRun01.msi through SqlRun16.msi), then I would attempt to load the SQL2KdeskSP3.exe to apply SP3a binary. After the upgrade it shut all my SQL Services (Server and Manager) down and I restarted them. I hope this helps
