hey guys i have never tried out solaris installation, although i have used solaris 8. but i have no idea about the solaris architecture. i am planning to dual boot my system with win and solaris is that possible. is it possible to install solaris on any pc or just the box manufactured by solaris.

U can install Solaris on an Intel based machine as well.. Solaris intel based installation media is available till solaris 8 version; but Sun has stopped providing intel based version starting from Solaris 9.

On Intel machines, Solaris can sit along with other OS's as well. U can have ur machine dual boot with solaris and windows.. U need to choose this option while installing Solaris.. After installing solaris, Solaris configuration assistant will prompt you to boot to either of OS's.

Hope this solves ur query..

ya to some extent u have solved my query, but want i heard is
solaris will have problems with other hardware. that is the
reason people usually buy solaris with the box itself. is that
true?

right now i have win xp and linux installed on my pc , and dual
boot is working very will is it possible to have solaris
as well?

Well, on the newer intel boxes having latest peripherals like VGA card and network card, Solaris Intel installation might fail if it does not support those peripherals.. Ask for their drivers from your vendor..

And yes; Solaris will happily sit with another OS on ur machine..

All the best..

thanks Butterfly123/Hemant, will give it a try.

after two days of efforts i have solaris 8(intel) up and running for which i had to sacrifice windows 98. but during installation dhcp configuration falied. when i execute ifconfig command i get only one loopback interface. how do i setup eth0.

Are you going use this machine as DHCP server? Or the DHCP client?

In case u r using ur machine as DHCP server, then u need to hav a static IP to ur ethernet device (Add the IP to /etc/hosts) and then use ifconfig command to set the IP/mask to ur interface. After this, run dhcpconfig command to set up the server as DHCP server. The cmd has various options.. do man to that cmd and use reqd options

If u want to use this m/c as DHCP client, then u need to hav a working DHCP server in ur network. Use ifconfig command to make this server as DHCP client. Otherwise, the best way to do this using sys-unconfig amd and configure the interface as DHCP client.

Hope this helps..

i plan to use it has a dhcp client, i have a windows dhcp server already running.
i tried using ifconfig but was unable to setup the ethernet interface.
whatever the case either a dhcp server or client i need to first get this ehternet interface up and running , i went through the man pages of ifconfig and tired out the following command
ifconfig le0 plumb
and similar commands but every time it says le0 is not a valid interface. and neither eth0 works.

what do i do to get it up and running?

Issue the command "ifconfig -a" on ur machine and see what are the valid interfaces available on ur machine. Then, plumb the valid interface. LAter, use ifconfig 'interface' auto-dhcp start cmd.. and u should be thru.

There are many DHCP client options available with ifconfig cmd.. see the man.

what is the interface name for using the ethernet card. i have tried le0 and eth0 but nothing works, may be these are not the expected ones. when i do a ifconfig -a only one interface is listed which is loop back.

try using elx0 to identify your nic card...
hope this helps

Check whether you hav hme0 or iprb0 kinda interfaces on ur system. The system might install the ethernet interfaces with these names..
