Hi..

I tried to install Solaris 2.6 5/98 on Enterprise 3500 but failed and shows message unable to reconfigure EEPROM.
Then I tried to format the hard drives (3 HDs) but failed.
Now each time I tried to repeat installation found error could not create solaris disk label, could not label disk..

You're in luck. I just ran across this problem. What is the make and model hard drive are you using? I ask because apparently the newer fcal drives with the newer firmware revisions have problems with the install of Solaris 2.6 and 7. The problem is that only Solaris 8 has the drivers to run the newer drive. If this is the case I will send you the work around to get you going again with these disks. It involves using the Operating Environment cd and load 3 patches before installing the OS.

my hard drives is
18 GB Seagate - Cheetah
Model No. ST31830FC

do I get the same problem just like you..

I think you left off a digit on your model number. Mine is the same make but here is the model ST318304FC. I am willing to bet that you have the 4 on yours too. Anyway here is your fix. It was sent for 2.51 and 2.6. Since there are a few steps that you need to add for the 2.6 read the whole procedure before trying it out. Let me know how it works for you.

Workaround Procedure for Solaris 2.5.1
======================================
This procedure will enable 2.5.1 Hardware: 11/97 to be installed onto
ST318304FC or ST336704FC drives. It requires the use of OECD 02/2000
(P/N 704-7076-10) and 2.5.1 Hardware: 11/97 CD's and the availability
of patch 105310-08 (or later), either from a CD or from a host
connected to the network.

1) Load OECD 02/2000 and from OBP:

ok boot cdrom

2) Proceed through OECD 02/2000 installation as follows:

Would you like to use this installer? [y,n,?] y
The default root disk is /dev/dsk/c0t4d0.
The Solaris installer needs to format

Enter a swap partition size between 320Mb and 17269Mb, default = 512Mb [?]

You have selected /dev/dsk/c0t6d0 with a swap size of 512
to be used by the Solaris installer.

WARNING: ALL INFORMATION ON THE DISK WILL BE ERASED!

Workaround Procedure for Solaris 2.6
======================================================================

The workaround for Solaris 2.6 is the same as for 2.5.1, except:

1) Use the 2.6-5/98 CD instead of the 2.5.1-11/97 CD.

2) Three 2.6 patches are required to be loaded at Step 11. Install in
this order: 105356-09, 105357-04 and 105375-25.

Use 'patchadd' to install the patches instead of 'installpatch'.
Example: # /a/usr/sbin/patchadd -R /a ./105357-02

-------------- End 2.6 Workaround -------------------------

yes, you're right my hard drive model ST18304FC.
But mine still having installation problem.
I'm using Solaris 2.6 and finished all workaround steps you gave then after step 12 while rebooting the system it fails, the default boot device became : net.

It come up like this :

-----------------------------------------------------------
5-slot Sun Enterprise E3500, No Keyboard
OpenBoot 3.2.28, 1024 MB memory installed, Serial #11334732
Copyright 2000 Sun Microsystems, Inc. All rights reserved
Ethernet address 8:0:20:ac:f4:4c, Host ID: 80acf44c.

Rebooting with command : boot
Boot device : net File and args :

Timeout waiting ARP/RARP Packet

----------------------------------------------------------

Then I tried to boot from the disk and the message I get is

" Can't open boot device "

I couldn't find the patches as you describes at instead I using this patches :

105356-18, 105357-04 and 105375-26

Btw..

I'd like to add the fact that while rebooting there is a message come up...

"The disk c0t0d0 is not fstype"

(I use disk c0t0d0 as boot disk)

then the same message as I describe above come up :

-----------------------------------------------------------
5-slot Sun Enterprise E3500, No Keyboard
OpenBoot 3.2.28, 1024 MB memory installed, Serial #11334732

Rebooting with command : boot
Boot device : net File and args :

Timeout waiting ARP/RARP Packet

----------------------------------------------------------

Sounds like your disk isn't aliased to the correct path. You need to do a nvalias and nvstore to set the path correctly. (Make sure that you are a yes for the use-nvram variable.) To figure out the path try a probe-fcal-all and show-disks add the wwn to the end of the path and you are there. If you want a quick test try boot into single user mode with the cdrom then mount one of your partitions to /a and try to make a file there. If so then the procedure worked but you need to set your prom variables correctly.

hi.. at last.. it works!!
After reboot, I just do devalias to disk 0 (put it at slice 0) and setenv the boot-device for.
And it works.. thanks a lot for your help..
