Under yast in SLES9 can you install software under a different
location. Example: I want to install apache under /opt
instead of where is by default would go
Can this be done??

Package management systems use rules for their distribution to accomodate their own preferences. If you don't want to think, they'll do it for you and you live with the decision.

Compile for yourself and the world's as you make it.

Some smart person might know more about yast and constradict me, but I think the argument itself is sound.

You can sym link it to anywhere... If your not planing on upgrading it using yast, you can just move it and change a few links in /etc and etc's sub directories. Besides that yast may have a commandline argument to do this...
