Hi all,

I have a Dell server onto which I need to install the openManage software.

This is for a new environment and I've been advised to wait until this server has run DCPROMO before I install openManage.

I had one quick question; should I install the SNMP service on a domain controller? OpenManage apparently doesn't need it but are there good reasons to install it?

We dont have any network monitoring software!

Is there any best practise/guidance on this?

Kind regards

Tim

Hi Tim

If you do not have any network monitoring software then there is no point enabling SNMP...
OpenManage I guess is like HP SIM..We use HPSIM to try and preempt hardware failures...but if you have no central monitoring system then there is not much point for SNMP.
Trying to find that central monitory tool (to which SNMP would report) is a difficult task....you might as well have a look at solarwinds.

Thanks for the reply.

There is a Dell tool called IT Assistant which does a form of monitoring I believe - if not then I will try to find something as I could do with a heads up prior to turning up on a monday morning to find carnage!

This is a brand new environment so I was just wandering whether there were repucussions on installing SNMP onto a server prior to it being DCPROMO'd... as it happens i've done it anyway now! Fingers crossed but I shouldn't think it will cause any issues.

I've built quite a few Dell servers. SNMP can enable OpenManage to monitor more features of the server. The default installation of SNMP on 2003 will only allow the local host to connect to it, which is what you will need for OpenManage. I suggest that you finalize the server name before installing OpenManage.

Other than that, when you install OpenManage is a matter of personal preference. It will not impact your DCPromo, and the DCPromo will not impact OpenManage.
