Howdy all,

Is there a way to install Microsoft Service Packs using GPO's? The only way i have found it to work is to create a ZAP out of the file w2ksp2.exe and have it appear in the control panel. This is ineffective because the end users cannot launch it as they do not have rights to install software.

Any ideas? I am not a big fan of SMS but I do like GPO's...

thanks!

I assume you want users to run sp2 on their local machine from an administrative installation point on the server - to do this, you need to download the network version of sp2 from M$ web site.

I've got this working on my network. Using the version mention above. I've applied it to Computers instead of users so that it installs on the machines during startup and the user can't cancel it. (be carful of remote laptop users). It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to install.

just look at the MS site for another problem and found these two articles

and though they may help.

Hi,

I am attempting to get the exact same thing done for my machines with SP3. Do you assign permissions for the GPO's based on individual machine accounts or a group? I was able to get it to run fine for one machine, but not more than one.

I just leave the default seetings of Authenticated Users having Read GPO and Apply GPO ...... domain computers are actually members of the Authenticated Users group.

During testing though I create a group and add the computer accounts to this group. On the test GPOI then removed the Apply GPO from the Authenticated users and add it for the Test group I've created.

Hope this helps
