installing sendmail on a fbsd box 1

After the usual sequence of:

make && make install && make restart

there was the following message:
"Restarting: /etc/rc.sendmail: restart-mta: /var/run/sendmail.pid not found
sendmail-clientmqueue"

What does that mean? What can be done?

It means /var/run/sendmail.pid did not exist, probably because sendmail was not running.
