I've always been an on-site tech. and am now being thrown into the field. How should I properly install a modem for remote access on 61c and 81c?

Just curious, is there already an SEB type device on these systems that you could use for remote access?

Not sure yet. I start this Monday and there are 7 different systems. I'm to add new modems if there are addition ports available. They don't take over the contract till 4/1/12. Just trying to prepare myself. Thanks.

There are some FAQs that might help:

Also understanding the difference between a straight and null modem cable will save you a lot of guessing.
If you are replacing old modems, they will probably be the wrong gender. So, an assortment of adapters will come in handy. Take pictures of the previous modem disconnected so you don't second guess what you saw :)

While you are at the site, look for the install media. If you have to crack passwords, you will be glad you knew if you had the software. 3.0 and below can be cracked using the last backup. Newer versions, like 4.5 and up need more magic, or the install media.

Let's say that there are no modems there to start. What steps would you take to begin? Printing the config to see what's already programmed? What steps next?

There were modems at one time, it is almost certain. You will need to visit the site to see what cables are really used. The quickest avenue when you arrive will be this.

LD 37
.STAT TTY

Then

LD 22
REQ PRT
TYPE ADAN TTY

Then look for MSDL cards in the front of the CPU/Network shelves, and paddle boards in the back of those shevles.
