Hi all, I need some help!

I've been tasked to install and setup Project Server 2007 on our servers. Problem is, I don't know ANYTHING about Server and how it works....so I'm kind of lost as to how to set it up.

My current setup is SQL Server 2000 on a stand-alone, internal server. My Application server is on another server, internal only. I ran the Project Server 2007 setup on my Application Server (Windows Server 2008) and it installed fine. Once it installed it asked me to configure it, and this is where I get lost. I tried to connect to an existing server farm (thinking it would connect to my SQL 2000 DB server) and it errors out. So I tried to create a new server farm and it got 90% through it and failed (with no specific reason). UGH! So I then thought it might not like SQL 2000, so I installed SQL 2005 on the Application server and setup a new farm and it worked fine. I get to the Admin web page and it says the configuration is not complete and to follow the tasks, which I did and it errors out on the 3rd task 'Assign Services to Server'. It gives me no indication as to why it fails, it just says "ERROR".

Can anyone help me with this setup? I've looked around the internet but can't find any step by step instructions as to how to set this up for the first time.

Any help/advice is greatly appreciated!

There's virtually no Project Server expertise here (I'm a resource for standalone MS Project).

I do know that there are serious constraints about the mix of Project Server/SQL Server/Project combinations but can only suggest looking here or here as starting points for information like that.

It's been a *long* time since I played with Server, but (IIRC) there are *tons* of documents on the DVDs that discuss (in mind-numbing detail) how to install Server and the related software packages.

You might (note: *might*) find it useful to go to Amazon and search on Chefetz ... Gary has written extensively on the topic.

Finally, it's not clear to me if you are upgrading to P2007 server or simply starting to migrate your company to Project Server. If it's the latter then you should probably do some serious research internally. You may very well find that the additional support overhead significantly outweighs any benefits that you might get from continuing to use Project and performing occasional manual processes that generate "consolidated" project reports. For that analysis you can start here.

Thank you for this information. I will look into the links and options you have presented.
