You can use the 'printconf-tui' utility. Its a menu-driven interface from the command prompt that will edit the /etc/printcap file for you automatically.

Correct. The "-tui" at the end of the command stands for Text User Interface, which is the opposite of GUI. You can start it right from the shell. It opens a menu driven interface that is very simple to use.

Where is this file located? I cannot run it from the promt because of pathing issues I think. James Collins

Try a locate 'printconf-tui' to see if its installed. Its probably in /usr/sbin. Its part of the printconf RPM package.

If the printconf tool is not installed, how do I install it? Red Hat 7 and the printconf tool is not in /usr/sbin. James Collins

Install the printconf RPM package for RH7. Its on one of the RH7 CD's or you can download it from RH's website or rpmfind.net.

Install it just as you would any other RPM package...

rpm -ivh packagename.rpm

ChrisP

Do you happen to know the exact name of the printconf rpm? James Collins

Its probably just printconf-x.x.x.rpm, where x.x.x is the version of the package. Just look in the RPMS folder on each RH7 CD until you find it.

ChrisP

It was not on any on the RH7 Cd's I have. Does it come with RH7? James Collins

Which version of RHL are you using? I just checked disc 1 of RHL73 and its on there...

/RedHat/RPMS/printconf-0.3.77-1.i386.rpm

We use Red Had Version 7. If I download a version for 7.1 will it work for 7.0? James Collins

Probably. It can't hurt to try:) The worst that will happen is it will give you a dependency error during the RPM installation.

Ok, I know I am asking a lot of questions, but how do I install the rpm from a command line? James Collins

You can try upgrading RPM to the latest version. Which version are you running?

rpm -qa | grep rpm
rpm -qi rpm

ChrisP

rpm-3.0.4-0.48
gnorpm-0.9-15
rpm-build-3.0.4-0.48
rpm-devel-3.0.4-0.48
rpm-python-3.0.4-0.48

Does this help? James Collins
