Hi
I don't know if anybody is able to help me.
I need an updated printer driver utility, so I downloaded one from the lexmark website.
The file is in the form of .pkg, the instructions are just to use smit to install.
however within smit it doesn't recognise this type of file to install. Has anybody come across this filetype before and knows how to install it.
I would be very grateful
I am using AIX 4.3.3

Many Thanks

Hi Moose,

I've seen problems where files have been downloaded to a PC then ftp'd (binary transfer) to an AIX server, but the download hasn't worked because of firewall/translation problems with the file on the MS DOS side of things, leading AIX not to recognise the file as a valid file-type for a package. Is this the case here?

Hi Ken,
Thanks for replying so fast.
I don't think this is the case in this instance, as this is the way I have done things before for AIX patches etc.
I assumed that Smit would have picked up the .pkg extension after I told it which directory to look in.

Are you including the full pathname (including the filename and extension) in your request? I can't think of any other reason why this shouldn't be working, but others may well be able to help when they arrive. Cheers.

Hi,

What about doing a "/usr/sbin/inutoc ." in the directory you have the pkg file before using smit ?

Hi Moose

Check the File whit the File Command.
If the File is not a backup/restore Format the Device Driverfile is wrong.
Normaly the AIX Installable Filesets will end with the Extension .bff or .I

Thanks all, especially nwardez
I was forgetting the inutoc .

much appriciated
Have a pint on me!
