Installing PB Diamond 1200 USB Scanner - or is it Mustek? or Bearpaw?

I'm having immense problems installing a USB Scanner. I have tried on two PCs - one Win2K SP4, the other WinME

It says on Packard Bell Diamond 1200 UB plus scanner, but it also seems to be Mustek or a Bearpaw. Maybe that's just branding and OEM Marketing, I don't know.

I have the original setup CD-ROM which is labelled Packard Bell Diamond 1200 UB Plus.

I have followed the setup to the letter, I install all the software, close down the PC, plug-in the scanner and reboot. Windows says - "Found new hardware" but identifies it as "USB Scanner", not the brand name. And consequently can't find any drivers.

Digging around in the Device Manager comes up with:
"The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28)."
which is correct, and the MS KB suggests re-installing them. This is now a circular problem as re-installing produces the same result.

I've downloaded and run various setup files from Mustek/Bearpaw and PB, including assorted patches and updates, but the problem persists.

To be honest, I'm getting sick of uninstalling, rebooting, re-installing, rebooting and getting the same message. I've tried all the USB ports, all Ver 2, and still it persists.

Google throws up pages of the same problem, and while a few people seemed to have got their scanner working, none of their solutions work for me.

I'm coming to the conclusion the scanner is actually damaged, though it has worked in the past. The major change is trying to attach it to another PC, as the original one is with us no more.

The other possibility is that this is a USB1.1 device and it doesn't connect fully with USB2 ports, but that's not usually case.

What I think I need is a "Mustek1200UBPlus.inf" file to kick the installation of the drivers in to gear, but can I find it???

So if anyone has a solution, I'd love to know it. Even if there such a thing as a generic "USB Scanner".

Thanks for listening…

My results with scanners is several steps worse than yours but I will offer a suggestion based on some other stuff I've fought with.

When you installed the software from the CD it may have put the drivers in a folder dedicated to the scanner. And the general process to get the proper driver is to go into the mangler to where it indicates that the SW is broken, choose renew, and then browse to the special folder.

You could try a google search for the .inf file. Some goodhearted person may have uploaded it to one of the driver sites.

Give the wrong symptoms, get the wrong solutions.

Here are two links that appear to offer the driver you are looking for, but I would think they are the same as you already have.

Looking briefly for other ideas I saw comments about something called acpi and usb sometimes having incompatibility, apparently you can try uninstalling acpi. I would do some research on that before doing anything though.

The other thing I saw related to usb control cards, the implication I would take from that is that maybe you should research the particular usb controller in your system and see if there are any updated drivers available for it.

There is a site called usbman that might offer addition ideas.

Apologies for not getting back sooner, but this damn scanner driver will just not install.

Ed, I'm Googled out looking for suitable *.inf file, and Diogenes, I'm sorry to say I'd already followed the links you gave. The USB ports on the rear of the Dell (Win2K SP4) are powered, and seem fine with all other devices, e.g optical mouse, I've attempted to re-install the USB drivers but they're same as the existing, so I'm concluding they're the correct ones.

There's a few thread in USBMan about the same problem but no successful solution. Suggestions were that there was not enough power from the port but I'm not convinced: the scanner is detected but not spcifically identified, and despite the setup program having been run and the PC re-booted, it halts at that point as the required drivers can not be found and there is no specific *.INF file to point the hardward wizard to. Weird.

Doesn't W2K install default drivers for the scanner? Using old software always causes problems. I know WORD recognizes scanners under W2K.
