Is it safe to install OS-X onto my iBook g4 (currently running on OS-9) without everything on the hard drive getting erased?

You use the Archive and Install option when installing OSX. Everything on your hard drive will then be preserved. Just make sure to read up on archive and install before you install.

Just remember that none of your OS9 apps will work under OSX, so you'll have to replace them too.

Depending on the age of your machine you might also need a firmware update before installing.

Using OSX 10.3.9 & 10.4.11 on a G4, G5 & Intel Macbook
