Hello,

I have a laptop that has 2 partitions, and Win 98. When I install Office 97 onto this computer, a msgbox comes up telling me that the setup could not add a line to the Autoexec.bat file, and that I should add it. So I did (it points to the folder where Office resides). Now, I have a problem where I cannot open any Office programs without drilling down in Windows Explorer to the .exe file. I have no problems with the programs when I do get them open, but when I try to open them with shortcuts, I get a "There is not enough free memory" errors. I have no other programs open and minimal items running. Any suggestions?

Thanks a lot!

Here is what I've done so far...Did a complete uninstall and reinstall of Office, created new shortcuts, cleaned up my hard drive (including doing a defrag), applied SR1 & SR2 for Office...installed it on a different computer with no partitions and had no problems, so I am under the impression it has to do with the configuration of this system (also installed it on a desktop with the same configuration and had the same problem).

Office will still install a lot of files on the C: partition even if you are installing it to a different partition. It seems that you may be out of drive space on the C: partition when office tries to use the virtual memory space. Try moving some files and programs to the other drive partition.

The program files are on the c: partition. The d: partition is the system restore files. I don't know much about partitions - this is just how the computer was set up when it was purchased. There is over 750 MB left on the d: partition and over a GB left on the C: partition. Would you recommend uninstalling other programs from the C: partition? Or adjusting the Virtual Memory (I am nervous about doing that).

I have had the same problem on a Desktop as described, the out of memory was caused by me having true type fonts only marked. I still have not got the system to install correctly ( bizzarely word only has one font, yet all other ap's have all fonts available, even tried correl and it's the same ) And again bizzarely four other identical machines running identical setups are running office quite happily. I have just chalked it up to a windows psycho glitch, mumbled some words about contacting software vendors and left the office to come look here.

Try installing office 97 sr2b patch, here's the link. I'm not big on Norton Utilities, but I have found that Windoctor is usefull in finding registry problems where, for example, a shortcut points to a network drive or another partition and the executable was moved or the drive letter has changed. 99% of the time Windoctor will correct the entry with the right path and/or filename/driveletter, etc. You can do this by hand but it gets rather tedious. It is common to find triple digit invalid shortcut entries.
