Just got two new Dell OptiPlex 755s in with Intel Core 2 Duo vPro processors in there.

If I try and fire up an XP Pro intaller CD, it just blue screens on both machines before even getting to the first setup options.

'A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.'. STOP: oxoooooo7B

How do I get around this? I'm assuming this is something to do with the vPro technology...

assumption aside, it probably has nothing to do with the vPro feature at all...

the STOP x7b usually has something to do with a BOOT device (failed driver etc.)...

So mostlikely it has to do with the build in SATA controller or IDE controller, meaning that XP tries to load a wrong driver for them...

work around would be to integrate the correct driver into XP (i.e. through nLite)...

Are you using your Dell install CD or are you using something like a retail disk?

You should use the Dell disk, I have 4 of the Optiplex 755's and using a Dell disk worked perfect. Like Ben said, probably the SATA drivers are not loading.

The answer is always "PEBKAC!

I resolved this by going into the BIOS and setting the drive controller to "Legacy". After that I was able to install XP from my Enterprise license disk. Ultimately this also allowed me to recycle a previous disk image which is what I really wanted to do in the first place.

After that, I installed all the drivers from the Dell utilities disk and was then able to set the controller back to "RAID Autodetect / ATA".

In the BIOS, go to Drives, SATA Operation, and set that to "Legacy". I imagine using F6 drivers would have worked too, but I've never actually had to do that before. I guess the controller is just too new even for a XP SP-2 disk.

Some mobo's do not have that option in the BIOS...

Glad that yours did, which made the install easy...

and glad that it worked out in the end for you...

PS: SP2 is almost SATA unaware, at least what most controller chips are concerned, even with controllers that where manufactured BEFORE the release of SP2...
