Is there any way to install multiple versions of IE on my machine for testing purposes? I have IE 6.0 installed, but I want to install IE 5.0 in addition for testing. It won't let me. Also, IE will not allow you to download Netscape (big surprise!). How do I get around that?

Thanks! Calista :-X

I'm pretty sure it's impossible to have more then one version of IE running at once. As for Netscape... I can download it with no problems, and i'm using IE 6.0.

Well, maybe it's Netscape's website. I keep getting "Page Not Found" when I click on the download button. As far as more the one version of IE, I can accept that, but what do the rest of you do when you want to check your work on various versions of IE? You can check out my earlier post where I am having a problem with IE 5.0, but it doesn't occur in 5.5 or 6.0. I'd like to be able to test it myself without having to ask users who still have 5.0 to check it out for me. I have Office 2000, and I can't even find where they've hidden IE to uninstall it and install 5.0. Calista :-X

Hi, you can find your IE setup.exe's in c:\program files\internet explorer\. To uninstall IE open My computer then control panel then open add/remove programs... scroll down the list untill you find IE then remove.

Here is the url for netscape that i used... newest version...
Popular v4.7
Are the problems your having with IE versions to do with CSS?

Glenn

Hi,

You can install multiple versions of the same browser by partitioning your hard drive..

There are quite a few partition managers that will guide you through this.

I don`t have a url for any at present but I will post it here when I find one..

If you uninstall IE6 to install IE5 then what will you do when you want to test a site in 6? Seems a hard way to go about it...

Also about the netscape issue, there is nothing stopping you installing netscape on a machine with IE on it, I have netscape, opera and IE on my machine without any problems..

Hope this helps Wullie

Thanks, wullie! I downloaded ranish, and I'll give it a try. I knew there had to be a way. I did get Netscape downloaded and installed. It must have just been a site problem that day.

Glenn:

Gee, how'd you guess I am having trouble getting Netscape to cooperate with CSS? There seem to be numerous posts in this forum on that very subject. I'm sure I'll be back when it's time to address those issues. Right now, this project is still in the planning stage. I created a small, departmental intranet site, and now they want me to go company-wide, including an extranet. Before, I didn't have to worry about browser compatibility because everyone has IE,(Although I do have some issues between IE 5.0 and 5.5) but now I do. I also have one user in particular who hates all things Microsoft, and will be greatly relieved at not being forced to use IE to view my site. Calista :-X

wullie,

In regards to setting up additional browsers;
How do you keep them form overwritting eachother...example: I use and prefer IE 5.5 but everytime I open Netscape it changes all my settings to use that browser. Then I have to go back and reset all my file associations to use IE again. It's a never ending cycle.

I would be interested in installing Mozilla and Opera as well but am leery to do so because of the Netscape/IE war that goes on everytime I open one lol. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Thanks! Moira

Hi mate,

When you open the browser, it should give you an alert that "Netscape is not your default browser, would you like to make it?" or something like that. There is a checkbox on that alert that allows you to specify that the browser should not perform this check when it runs. Select the appropriate options and then click "No" so that it does not perforn the checks.

I have many browsers installed on my machines and it allows you to check sites as they progress, this saves time from going back and re-writing code to get it to work cross browser.

As for multiple IE versions, then you need to install them on multiple partitions, as far as I am aware that is the only way.

Hope this helps Wullie

Great thanks! I'll try it out again and cross my fingers.

I do have two hard drives....could I install IE 6 on one and keep IE 5.5 on the other? The second drive doen't have a OS, its a slave drive, I use it for storage and all my programs are installed on the master. Moira
