Installing MSO2K10 Home & Student with MSO2K3 present

I've used MSO2K3 for some time now, and have the chance to install MSO2K10 Home and Office from a 3 copy version.

I use MSO2K3 Outlook and have collected over the years and big list of contacts, as well as using the Email and Calendar sections daily.

If I install MSO2K10 Home and Office with MSO2K3 present, what will happen?

Will Word, Excel and PP become Office10 versions, or will there be two versions side by side?
What will happen to Outlook as it's not part of MSO2K10 Home and Office?

Many thanks.
John.

You can run multiple versions of Word, Excel , and PowerPoint concurrently. The default on install is to upgrade your existing versions but you have the option to keep it and install side-by-side. The option is on a tab that is not shown by default, in one of the dialogs so keep your wits about you as you install.

You can not run multiple versions of Outlook, but as you don't have it in your version of 2010, your 2003 version will be unaffected and should carry on working as before.

Enjoy,
Tony

Tony, at risk of hijacking this thread, do you know if it's possible to install the Home-and-Student version and a full version of the same release of Microsoft office?

The reason I ask is that anyone with a campus agreement on a full version of Office will almost certainly be limited to work-only applications, while the Home-and-Student is limited to home use only. It seems to me that if someone, somewhere, has paid for both home and work use (albeit in two separate licenses), both uses should be legal, but I have yet to find a way to install both on one laptop, short of making a dual-boot machine.

Hi, Tony,

I'm quite happy to upgrade Word, Excel and PP from 2K3 to 2K10, but I'm not entirely convinced Outlook 2K3 will remain untouched.

Clearly PST backups of Outlook are de rigueur, but if Outlook 2K3 goes belly up during the upgrade to 2K10,
a) will I be able to re-stall Outlook 2K3 from the Office 2003 setup disc; or
b) can Windows Live Mail 2011 import the *.PST file ex Outlook 2K3?

I've had a look around the MS KB, but it's not clear e.g. Installing Office Home and Student 2010 deleted Outlook 2003 not in suite There do seem to be some options in the Office 2K10 installation which do what I want, but they're well buried, and I want to prepare for the worse case scenario - which judging from my past experiences, is more than likely to happen.

No; that doesn't work. There is no difference in the software (well, there might be some slight differences depending on the version - retail vs. enterprise, for example - but they are probably not significant). The real difference is in the licence - H&S does have restrictions, I don't know about campus agreements (don't even know if they allow installation on a second machine) but disallowing home use is unlikely.

Enjoy,
Tony

Hmm…

I'll give it a go, making sure I have a restore point, good backups, and thoroughly check the installation options before hitting go.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Sorry - looks like I missed a post there.

Things can, and do, go wrong from time to time, and taking precautions won't do any harm. That's an interesting thread, but installing H&S 2010 really should not touch Outlook 2003 at all.

As a rule, you should always install the earliest version of Office first - installing Outlook 2003 when you already have, say, Word 2010, could cause problems (with 2010) and you may have to repair the installation.

No Office installation should affect your data in any way, so you shouldn't lose anything no matter what happens. For the record WLM cannot read PST files.

Enjoy,
Tony

OK, the bottom line is success.

However, after entering the Product Key for MSO H&O 2101 and accepting the T&Cs, the first question is "Upgrade or Custom Install".

After looking around, I chose Custom Install. All the options are listed there, but guess is that if "Upgrade" is selected, the installer will install a TRIAL version of Outlook 2010 in place of Outlook 2K3.

Here's a few screen shots of the Custom install options and my choices:

All went well:

However the Trial/Purchase nag was still present:

so I removed it all!

Then there was 67Mb of updates…

So all is well - with Word, Excel and Powerpoint now version 2010 and Outlook, Publisher and Access remaining as Ver 2K3.

Thanks for your support, cheers, John.

PS: Screen captures aren't too big IMO, but if the mods decide I'm out of order, please change the images to simple links.

Glad it all went well, and thanks for coming back. That really is a bit naughty having a trial that will override your licensed version install by default.

Enjoy,
Tony

The linked query above to Microsoft Answers now makes sense.

Thanks, all! And yes, I fell foul of the trial thing too, the trial being pre-loaded on my laptop, and utterly useless to me as I already had the campus license and H&S.

Incidentally, hasn't anyone at Microsoft worked out that selling H&S in a plastic case the size of an old video tape is just plain silly? We can all see why they're doing it: no one wants to pay a hefty sum for just one square inch of hologram. But it's an unenvironmentally stupid waste of plastic, and my bookshelf is too small for yet more large empty cases.
