How Do I Install a Downloaded Media Image e.g gcc_vol.tar So as to install new Sofware in my SCO Open Server 5.0.7

scoadmin, software install.

You have then a option to select where is the software you are installing.

Media files need to follow a particular naming convention. make sure they are like that.

And most software for Unix/Linux will have a readme with the required instalations steps. Make sure you read it before starting the install.

Unable to initialize device! error Is what I'm now getting when i'm trying to install the VOL.000.000 which is in my / folder.

Your example indicates a tar volumn, which probably indicates that the media image is already named correctly, but must be extracted to be usable.
Login as root and 'man tar' to get the options.

This is how the earlier versions worked. Not familiar with any changes that 7 might have made.

What media is the downloaded file stored on?

Give the wrong symptoms, get the wrong solutions.

The conventional tar xvf gcc-2.95.2-VOLS.tar gives me the following error:

tar: directory checksum error

Where I'm I going wrong?

I've changed my approach: I now intend to use the GNUGCC packages in my Development Kit (On CD), my bandwidth is too low and it might take me forever to download a file like that again.

After mounting my CD how can I install the packeges using "pkgadd"?

that depends on the package.

See the install instructions of each particular software you are trying to install.

Many will even give you a install script to execute.
