Hi,
I'm new to SMS and have a server (lets call it "SMSinitial").
Note: All servers are running Win2003 with IIS and BITs & WebDav
I have one site that I'm trying to run. I have installed SMS from CD on SMSinitial using a custom installation so that nothing is enabled by default. The SQL database is also installed on SMSinitial. I would like to set it so that the reporting and management points are on another server to try to eliminate some of the load. The second server is "SMSlater." I have IIS installed along with BITS on the SMSlater server and have given SMSinital admin rights to SMSlater.
I go to define the server in the SMS console and it creates the server object. When I go to the properties on SMSlater it and tell it to be a management point, I get the following errors under SMS_COMPONENT_SITE_MANAGER:
****************
Could not read registry key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SMS\MP" on computer SMSlater.
SMS Site Component Manager failed to configure site system "\\SMSlater" to receive SMS server components.
SMS Site Component Manager could not detect which version of the Microsoft Windows NT Server operating system is running on site system "\\SMSlater"
********************
SMSlater doesn't have anything installed off of the SMS CD. I dont want to install another primary site and I dont want a secondary one, so I'm guessing that the server SMS is already on (SMSinitial) pushes out the components to SMSlater (assuming IIS is installed with BITS)???
It almost sounds like a permissions problem from the errors, but SMSinitial has admin rights over SMSlater (the computer account).
There doesn't seem to be any clear documentation that I can find about making another server that takes over the management point roll.
This is really driving me nuts. Thanks so much for the help
